Chronic Medically Refractory Low Back Pain Clinical Trial

The UCLA Neurosurgery invites you to participate in a clinical study that evaluates the preliminary efficacy and safety of Deep Brain Stimulation of the Subgenual Cingulate Cortex in the treatment of chronic, medically refractory low back pain.


We are seeking participants: 

  • Ages 50-74
  • History of chronic low back pain as primary neurologic diagnosis with persistent pain despite maximal medical therapy (including spinal cord stimulation) 
  • Pain due to low back pain or failed surgery syndrome (FBSS)
  • Documented pain of over 5 years

Study participation consists of:

  • Baseline visit for MRI Imaging, Psychological assessments, and Questionnaires 
  • Deep Brain Stimulaiton (DBS) implantation 
  • Follow-up visits: you will be seen at least once a month for approximately 18 months following your surgery, with each visit lasting approximately 3 hours.
